The museum is located in a picturesque place on the right bank of the Angara River in the Taltsy tract, at 47 km of the Baikal highway, on the road from Irkutsk to Lake Baikal. It was founded in 1966 to preserve unique monuments of Russian wooden architecture of the XVII — XIX centuries.
On the territory of 67 hectares 40 historical and architectural monuments are presented, including 36 wooden buildings and more than 20,000 exhibits. The museum acquaints visitors with the lifestyle, living conditions and spiritual culture of not only the Russian local population, but also the indigenous peoples of the Baikal region — the Buryats and the Evenks.
Pottery and bark crafts are recreated in the museum. Each visitor can blind a small clay “masterpiece” with his own hands and take him away with him as a souvenir. In addition, the Taltsy Museum is a joy to walk in a beautiful place in the Angara bend and traditional Russian amusements: horseback riding, Russian swings, stilts, slides, tug-of-war, snowballing.
The museum also has a tavern where you can taste traditional Siberian dishes.
